A significant 19th-century devotional oil painting originating from Bohemia, depicting the Passau Madonna (after the original 16th-century composition by Lucas Cranach the Elder).

This work is a fine example of the Mariahilf ("Mary of Help") tradition that was central to Bohemian and Bavarian religious life during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The composition features the Virgin Mary in a rich red tunic and a luminous blue mantle, holding the Christ Child. The Child is depicted in a tender, naturalistic pose, reaching up to his mother’s chin—a hallmark of the Cranach prototype. Mary is framed by a halo of twelve golden stars, symbolizing the Woman of the Apocalypse, and the infant Jesus is distinguished by a delicate circular halo.

Mary wears a deep blue mantle over a red robe, traditional colors symbolizing her humanity and divinity.

The figures are set against a dark, minimalist background, common in Central European devotional art designed for personal prayer or side altars..

The use of a deep, dark background emphasizes the sculptural quality of the figures and the vibrancy of the pigments.

The specific handling of the drapery and the facial features are characteristic of the provincial academic style prevalent in Central Europe during the mid-19th century.

Dated 1837, this work was created during the late Biedermeier period. In Bohemia, such paintings were often commissioned for private chapels or as "souvenirs" of pilgrimage to sites like Skoky (Maria Stock). The presence of a specific date (1837) adds considerable value for collectors of regional European history and religious folk art.

The work shows signs of age-appropriate wear, including scattered surface abrasions, a stable craquelure throughout, and significant paint loss/edge wear

Dimensions: 58,5cm x 42,5cm.
