An antique Koma-nuri (spinning top pattern) lacquerware box, likely a Marujyu (multi-tiered food container) or a Natsume (tea caddy), depending on its interior configuration. The vibrant concentric rings in red, yellow, and green on a black background mimic the appearance of a traditional Japanese spinning top (koma), which has been a popular design motif since the Edo period (1603–1868).

The koma design is highly auspicious in Japanese culture, symbolizing "life spinning smoothly" and "perpetual motion". Given its dimensions (11cm height, 12cm diameter) and weight (333g), it is a substantial piece of Urushi (natural lacquer) craftsmanship, likely dating to the early 20th century (Meiji or Showa era).

An exceptionally vibrant and collectible example of Japanese Koma-nuri lacquerware. This lidded box features a striking "spinning top" pattern, characterized by bold, concentric rings of hand-applied red, yellow, and green lacquer over a deep black ground. The interior is finished in a brilliant, contrasting vermillion red, a classic hallmark of high-quality antique Urushi work.

In Japanese tradition, the koma (spinning top) design is a powerful symbol of good fortune and smooth progress in life. The meticulous application of colored lacquer layers creates a rhythmic, modern aesthetic that remains timeless. This piece’s sturdy construction and significant weight (333g) indicate a base of high-quality turned wood, likely Yamanaka or Kagawa in origin.
