This exquisite Kodansu (small tabletop cabinet) is a quintessential example of Japanese export art from the Meiji Period (1868–1912).
Combining two of Japan’s most celebrated decorative traditions—lacquerwork and parquetry—it represents an era where traditional craftsmanship met a growing global appetite for Japonisme.
Intricate Yosegi-Zaiku Parquetry: The cabinet’s exterior and internal drawer fronts showcase the remarkable Yosegi-Zaiku technique from the Hakone region. This "wooden mosaic" is created by meticulously bonding different natural woods—such as Keyaki (Zelkova), Hinoki (Cypress), and Kakinoki (Black Persimmon)—into complex geometric patterns like stars and triangles.
Gilt Lacquer Door Panels: The main doors feature stunning Maki-e (sprinkled gold) and relief lacquer panels. One panel depicts a serene mountainous landscape with Mount Fuji, while the other features a traditional figure amidst blossoming flora, symbolizing the harmonious beauty of Japanese nature.
Hidden Interior Layout: Behind the double doors lies an organized interior with six small drawers arranged in two columns, ideal for storing jewelry, incense, or small curiosities.
Ornate Metalwork: The piece is finished with original engraved copper or brass fittings, including protective corner mounts, butterfly-style hinges, and elegant "falling leaf" drawer pulls.
Dimensions: depth: 22cm, height: 43cm, width: 44,5cm.
