Antique Thai Sawankhalok Celadon Foliate Rim Dish (14th–16th Century)

Presenting a fine example of Southeast Asian ceramic artistry, this Thai Sawankhalok Celadon Dish dates to the Sukhothai Period (circa 14th–16th Century CE). Produced at the renowned Si Satchanalai kilns in north-central Thailand, these wares were highly prized export items across the maritime silk road.

Features a classic wide basin with a distinctive foliate (scalloped) rim, designed to echo the organic elegance of a blooming flower.

Clad in a thick, translucent celadon glaze that ranges from a soft sea-foam green to a deep olive. The glaze exhibits a natural, fine crackle (crazing), a hallmark of authentic antique celadon.

The center of the well is decorated with an incised floral medallion, often interpreted as a lotus or peony motif, surrounded by concentric linear bands that provide a sense of movement and depth.

High-fired stoneware, known for its durability and characteristic earthy tone where the glaze meets the unglazed foot.

The Sawankhalok kilns were a major production center that rose to prominence as they filled the market demand for celadon when Chinese exports were restricted. Pieces like this are frequently recovered from famous shipwrecks, such as the Royal Nanhai, testifying to their historical role in global trade. This dish represents the high point of Thai ceramic technical achievement, blending indigenous craftsmanship with Chinese aesthetic influences.

The plate was obtained from the private collection of and English collector Mr. Brian Page.
