This antique ukiyo-e woodblock print is a classic Kabuki theater triptych created by the celebrated Meiji-era artist Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900).

Known as the "Last Master of Ukiyo-e," Kunichika was famous for his dramatic actor portraits and bold, vibrant use of color.

Artist: Toyohara Kunichika (signed).
Format: Oban Triptych (three individual woodblock sheets intended to be viewed together).
Era: Meiji Period (late 19th century).
Subject: A high-drama scene from a Kabuki play, likely Kokusen'ya Gassen (The Battles of Coxinga).

The center sheet features the legendary actor Ichikawa Danjuro IX in the role of the hero Watonai. He is depicted in a powerful aragoto (rough style) pose, characterized by bold red face paint (kumadori) and his signature exotic red-dotted costume.

The print utilizes the rich, saturated reds and deep purples typical of the Meiji period, often achieved through then-modern aniline dyes.

Notice the fine woodblock carving in the patterns of the robes and the expressive, stylized facial features of the actors, which are hallmarks of Kunichika’s mature style.

Dimensions: 72cm x 36cm. 3 single sheets - 36cm x 24cm each.
