JAN FRANS VAN BLOEMEN, called L'ORIZZONTE (attr. to), Arcadian Landscape, Oil on Canvas, Italy, 17th/18th Century

Jan Frans van Bloemen, known as L'Orizzonte (Antwerp, 1662 – Rome, 1749), was a master of Arcadian landscape painting who rose to prominence in Rome's artistic circles during the late 17th century.

This oil on canvas exemplifies his signature approach to landscape composition—a carefully orchestrated recession of space that draws the viewer's eye from intimate foreground details through successive planes into an atmospheric, misty distance.

The painting presents a quintessential Van Bloemen composition: small figures engaged in pastoral pursuits occupy the lower left near a stream, their presence establishing human scale within an expansive natural world. A fortified hilltop settlement—possibly representing Fiano Romano or another structure of the Roman Campagna—anchors the middle ground, while a monumental tree frames the left edge, guiding the viewer's gaze into the luminous depths beyond.

Arriving in Rome around 1688 and joining the local Bentvueghels under the nickname Orizzonte (Horizon) due to his vast landscapes, the artist achieved immediate success as a successor to the 17th-century landscaping tradition of Gaspard Dughet.

The painting in question is typical of his production in its composition and Arcadian-pastoral subject matter, similar, for example, to the Landscape with Figures held at the Galleria Nazionale Barberini (oil on canvas, 48x75 cm, inv. no. 1042). The latter features a similar background with a fortified village and a luminosity close to the compositions of Andrea Locatelli, suggesting a dating to the first half of the 18th century.
