This antique Japanese bronze item is an incense burner, also known as a koro (Japan incense).
These functional art pieces were particularly popular during the Meiji period (1868–1912) and were often crafted in the shape of birds like geese or ducks.
- Design: The piece is shaped like a goose with an arched neck and an open beak.
- Function: The bird's body acts as a vessel for incense. When lit inside, the smoke rises through the long neck and flows out through the open beak, creating a beautiful visual effect.
- Base: The goose stands on a circular platform supported by a decorative tripod base. These bases often feature intricate carvings, sometimes incorporating mythical elements like dragon or lion-like feet.
- Material: It is made of bronze, typically finished with a dark, aged patina. High-quality versions from this era may include detailed engravings to represent individual feathers.
These bronze sculptures were highly prized in 19th-century Japan and became popular collector's items in the West during the late 1800s.
- Height: 38 cm
- Weight: 3200 g
- Base Dimensions: 20 x 17 cm
