Manner of Domenico Zampieri, called il Domenichino (Bologna, 1581–Naples, 1641), this exceptional oil on canvas presents a Lakeside Landscape with Boat and Figures measuring 44 × 100 cm.
This work exemplifies that tradition: an Arcadian river composition rendered in the Italian or Dutch school manner, employing sophisticated chiaroscuro to articulate spatial recession. Dense, dark foliage anchors the right edge while the left opens to a luminous expanse of water, distant mountains, and atmospheric sky. Small figures animate the foreground, engaged in pastoral or bucolic activity.
Domenico Zampieri, known as Domenichino, was a leading figure in early 17th-century Roman painting. A pupil of Calvaert and later of Annibale Carracci, he is documented in 1602 working alongside the latter as a collaborator on the decoration of Palazzo Farnese. The artist's fresco cycles are world-renowned; notable examples include the decorations at Palazzo Giustiniani in Bassano di Sutri (1609), the Farnese Chapel in the Abbey of Grottaferrata (1610), the Saint Cecilia Chapel in San Luigi dei Francesi (1611–1614), and the pendentives of the dome and tribune of Sant'Andrea della Valle (1623–1628).
While he is considered a master of Classicism, Domenichino followed in Annibale’s footsteps to create extraordinary ideal landscapes. These works, featuring streams, lakes, and distant villages as settings for rural scenes or evangelical themes, were pivotal to the development of the landscape genre throughout the Baroque and 18th-century periods. His style significantly influenced masters such as Claude Lorrain, Nicolas Poussin, Gaspard Dughet, and Jan Frans van Bloemen.
This singular masterpiece remains in its original, pristine historical state, capturing a moment in time prior to cleaning and professional restoration. Even in this untouched condition, it displays very well.
A significant example of European old master landscape painting, circa 17th century.
