A striking yakusha-e woodblock print capturing a kabuki actor in commanding theatrical presence.

Dating to the mid-19th century Edo period, this Utagawa School composition showcases the actor adorned in an elaborate indigo robe embellished with geometric mon crests, crimson sash, and ornamental cord—the costume of a warrior role.

The figure assumes a dramatic pose characteristic of performance portraiture, conveying the dynamic energy of the stage. Japanese cartouches identify the actor and role, with inscriptions referencing Saitō Saemonnojō and the stage name Shitō Hikozaburō.

A sheathed sword completes the martial aesthetic.

Dimensions: 23 cm × 36 cm.

A refined example of the yakusha-e genre that defined Edo-period popular collecting.
