An authentic 19th-century Japanese woodblock print triptych (yakusha-e) by the renowned Meiji master Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900).

Known as the "Last Great Master" of the actor print, Kunichika’s work is characterized by dramatic compositions and vibrant colors that captured the height of Tokyo’s Kabuki theater culture.

Artist: Toyohara Kunichika (signed in the vertical red/yellow cartouches).
School: Utagawa School influence.
Artistic Style: The print features Kunichika’s signature mie (dramatic poses) with exaggerated, expressive facial features and intense cross-eyed gazes, a technique used to heighten the theatrical tension of a scene.

Subject Matter: Four prominent Kabuki actors in a scene of confrontation or dialogue. The actors are identified by the individual name cartouches located near each figure.

Costume & Pattern: Exquisitely detailed kimonos featuring traditional Japanese patterns, including the kikko (hexagonal tortoiseshell) motif and intricate floral and geometric designs. The central figure’s purple robe and the female role's (onnagata) elaborate red floral kimono are particularly striking.

Setting: A classical stage set depicting a dark trellis fence and blooming cherry blossoms (sakura), suggesting a spring-themed performance.

Color Palette: Bold use of aniline dyes, specifically the "Meiji Red" and deep purples that were imported during this era and remain remarkably vibrant in well-preserved prints. Rich and well-saturated; no significant fading to the reds or purples.

Dimensions: 72cm x 37cm.
