These exquisite Swatow porcelain plates, dating from the first decade of the 17th century during the late Ming Dynasty, were crafted in Zhangzhou, Fujian province—one of China’s renowned ceramics production centers.
Recovered in 2002 from the Binh Thuan shipwreck off the coast of Vietnam—a Chinese junk that sank around 1608 while carrying a precious cargo of ceramics—these plates offer a tangible connection to the bustling maritime trade networks of its time.
Binh Thuan Shipwreck labels ("36995", "05619", "51853") on the base of the plates.
Designed for export to Southeast Asian markets, these deep dishes were finely painted in underglaze blue.
The central medallion’s imagery of phoenixes, embodies prosperity, good fortune, and harmony in Chinese culture, reflecting the plate’s auspicious significance. Encircling the central design, the border features a detailed fish-scale pattern interspersed with five oval cartouches, each containing delicate sprays of flowers and blossoms, adding to the plate’s refined artistry.
Measuring 28 cm in diameter, the plates are preserved in good condition with some firing imperfections and wear consistent with its age, along with typical grit and sand adhesion on the outer base. Restored as depicted on photographs. Plates show signs of wear, crazing, and discoloration of the glaze due to their time on the seabed.
These pieces not only represents a significant cultural artifact but also a glimpse into early 17th-century Chinese export porcelain craftsmanship.
