An exceptional 17th-century Dutch or Flemish portrait in oil on wood panel, presenting a prosperous merchant or patrician of the Golden Age.
The sitter's austere black doublet and commanding presence are offset by the painting's most striking element—an intricately pleated white ruff collar of fine linen, its scale and craftsmanship signifying considerable wealth.
The artist's refined technique captures both the luminous texture of the collar and the subject's penetrating, dignified gaze against a restrained dark ground.
The work is set within an elaborate gilded Baroque frame of "Auricular" design, its carved relief ornamentation featuring scrolling foliage and shell motifs characteristic of post-1650 Dutch taste.
A significant historical and artistic acquisition.
Canvas: 48 × 52 cm; framed: 61 × 67 cm.
