The Yuhuchunping (spring-in-a-jade-bottle) is one of the most iconic silhouettes in Chinese ceramic history. Characterized by its elegant "pear-shaped" body, slender neck, and flared rim, this form reached a peak of refined simplicity during the Song Dynasty (960–1279).
This specific antique vase is a prime example of Henan blackware, likely produced in the northern kilns of China. The vessel is covered in a thick, lustrous dark glaze that often transitions between deep black and rich brown.
A standout feature of this particular piece is its iridescent sheen. Depending on the angle of light, the surface can reveal a mesmerizing "oil-spot" or "partridge feather" effect, showcasing subtle shifts of metallic blue, rust-red, and charcoal. This visual depth was highly prized, as it turned a functional object into a piece of contemplative art.
The unglazed base reveals a buff-colored, coarse-textured clay.
The thick glaze ends in a characteristic "dripped" or uneven line near the foot. This behavior is common in Song Dynasty blackwares, where the high-viscosity glaze pools before reaching the base during firing.
Weight is 1354 gr.
Height is 24 cm.
Width is 17 cm.
