Artist: Toyohara Kunichika (Signed Kunichika hitsu with Toshidama seal)

Period: Meiji Era, circa 1870s–1880s

Medium: Original polychrome woodblock print (nishiki-e); ink and color on paper

Format: Oban triptych (three joined or individual sheets)

Artistic Composition:
An exceptional example of yakusha-e (actor portraiture) by the "Last Master of Ukiyo-e," Toyohara Kunichika. This triptych captures a pivotal moment of mie (dramatic posing) from a classic Kabuki play. The composition is expertly balanced, featuring four lead actors in highly stylized costumes against a vivid architectural background of a red temple gallery (kairo) and blooming cherry blossoms.

Pigment Quality: Features the bold use of imported aniline dyes (particularly the "Meiji Red") characteristic of the era’s "Red Prints" (aka-e), which remain strikingly vibrant in this impression.

Textile Rendering: The prints showcase meticulous attention to detail in the kimono patterns, including the bishamon-kikko (hexagonal) motif and intricate floral brocades, demonstrating the high-level carving skills of the Meiji period workshops.

Theatrical Drama: The interplay of gazes between the central figure and the flanking actors exemplifies Kunichika's ability to translate the tension of live theater onto the woodblock medium.

Kunichika was the foremost student of Utagawa Kunisada and is considered the bridge between the traditional Edo woodblock and the modernizing Meiji world. His triptychs are increasingly sought after by collectors for their intense color palettes and their status as the final evolution of the Utagawa school tradition.

Dimensions: 71cm x 37,5cm.
