This Japanese vase is a beautiful example of Mingei (folk art) style studio pottery, dating from the mid-to-late 20th century.

It features a rustic, handmade aesthetic that prioritizes functional beauty and natural imperfection, principles central to the wabi-sabi philosophy.

Form: A classic "squat" or bulbous body with two small loop handles at the shoulder. The narrow, tapering neck suggests it may be used as a tokkuri (sake bottle) or a bud vase.

Glaze & Color: The piece showcases a striking contrast between an earthy, toasted beige base and a rich cobalt blue drip glaze that flows down from the neck. This "running" or "poured" glaze technique is a hallmark of Japanese studio pottery, often associated with the Mashiko kilns.

Style: This specific look—rustic, earthy, and featuring "running" or drip glazes—is a hallmark of Mingei (folk art) studio pottery, often associated with the Mashiko tradition.

Decoration: The body is adorned with spontaneous, calligraphic brushwork in a dark iron-brown pigment. The abstract, swirling lines are reminiscent of traditional sugarcane or pine branch motifs common in folk pottery.

Craftsmanship: Visible throwing rings and slight irregularities in the form highlight its handcrafted nature, reflecting the spirit of the Mingei movement popularized by potters like Shoji Hamada.

Condition & Provenance: This piece shows authentic signs of age and use, consistent with its mid-20th century origin. The glaze remains vibrant, and the form is intact, making it a fine example for collectors of Japanese ceramics and folk art traditions.

Height: 17cm. Width: 14,5cm. Weight: 744,4 gr.
