Capture a vibrant moment of Japanese history with this exquisite original woodblock print triptych from the Meiji era.

Designed by the legendary artist Yōshū Chikanobu (1838–1912), this work is a quintessential example of his mastery in depicting the elegance and energy of Japan’s "Floating World" during a time of rapid modernization.

Subject: The Niwaka Festival at New Yoshiwara
This three-panel composition (oban triptych) portrays the Shin Yoshiwara Niwaka no Nigiwai—the bustling and celebrated Niwaka Festival in Tokyo’s famous pleasure district.
  • Moonlit Festivities: Set against a deep, dark sky and a luminous full moon, the scene is alive with glowing red lanterns and a festive parade.
  • The Parade of Beauties: High-ranking courtesans (oiran) and their young attendants are shown in breathtakingly detailed kimonos, featuring the "Meiji red" and purple aniline dyes that became the hallmark of the era.
  • Cultural Spectacle: A traditional lion dance (shishimai) figure in the central panel adds a sense of movement and authentic festive tradition to the work.

Artist Profile: Yōshū Chikanobu (1838–1912)
A former samurai who fought in the Boshin War before turning to art, Chikanobu was one of the most prolific and respected artists of the late 19th century. He is renowned for his bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women) and his unique ability to blend traditional Edo aesthetics with the changing fashions of the modern Meiji age.
